'Scarlet Letter' Question?

The minister, confesses a guilty conscience knowing that this will fill his congregation with pity and forgiveness for him, which is the interpretation he wants. However, by confessing a guilty conscience, the minister worsens the sin because he truly feels no remorse or guilt for what he has done. He can't feel the relief of self-delusion because he does not and can not believe his own lie, that he feels guilty. So therefore by speaking the truth, by confessing that he indeed did sin, he transformed that confession into a lie because the essence behind every confession is remorse and guilt for having committed the sin, feelings that he cannot feel because his sin was to love someone (Hester) and he sees no fundamental wrong in that.
